| The University School of Milwaukee Counseling Program for Lower School is designed
to prevent problems and help solve them as they occur. Teachers often plan for the counselor
to talk to the children about normal developmental problems that are common to the grade level
as a preventative device before problems occur. |

In Lower School students or parents come in contact with the School Counselor in
the following ways:
- Teachers often ask the counselor to speak to children in the classroom or to the whole grade
level when the group is experiencing interaction and problem-solving difficulties.
- A teacher may refer a student who is experiencing problems getting along with others to the
counselor. This is done only after obtaining permission from the child's parents.
- The parent or teacher may request that the counselor attend a parent conference.
